Seven Times Longer,

SEVEN TIMES LONGER, SEVEN TIMES MORE

Lately, I’ve been having a lot of conversations.

Actually, truth be told, practically every day since the very first day that we landed in Cerrillos, has been chock full of conversations.

Much of the talk has veered toward life in the country and how inconvenient in can be; likewise, we often talk about how unconventionally rewarding it can be as well.

So, today wasn’t much different, but every time I talk about it all - it also feels a little more meaningful each and every time, because our daily experiences serve as a testament to the guidance and wisdom that my neighbors and friends often offer based on their own years of trial and error; perseverance and triumphs.

For example, this afternoon I chatted with Henry who lives south across the Galisteo River, just a stone’s throw from Hacienda Dominguez & Chelenzo Farms.

Henry told me he grew up in Santa Fe, raised his grownup children here, and, for the past 15 years, has been a farmer - not only growing vegetables, but raising chickens, goats and pigs.

We talked for a good half an hour, sharing our endless list of endeavors and aspirations. In parting, he told me, “Just keep in mind - around here, everything takes seven times longer than you expect it to, and it will cost you seven times more than you can afford. But, if you’re committed to this lifestyle, if you aspire to be self-sustainable, like growing and raising your own food - than, it’s all worth the trouble. I should be retired by now, but I still wouldn’t have it any other way.”

We’ve been at this a mere ten months and I wouldn’t have it any other way either.

Everyday we’re climbing mountains, building bridges, inventing a better mousetrap, regreening the desert, making a difference and doing our part to make this a better world - and despite the stress and exhaustion and constant reminders to slow down, I’m still loving this inconvenient, yet absolutely blessed life.
